Getting here

Travel & Stay

A quiet river day in the mountains

Dillon sits at about 9,100 feet on the shore of Lake Dillon in Summit County. Here's how to get here, stay comfortable at altitude, and where to rest your head.

Flying in

  • Denver International (DEN) — main option. Dillon is about 100 miles west (~1 hr 45 min–2 hrs on I-70 in good conditions).
  • Eagle County (EGE) near Vail — fewer flights; roughly 66–75 miles (~1–1.5 hrs over Vail Pass).
  • No car? Airport shuttles run from DEN and EGE to Summit County. Once here, the free Summit Stage bus connects Dillon, Frisco, Silverthorne, Keystone, and Breckenridge. CDOT's Pegasus express also runs from Denver Union Station with a Frisco stop. Wedding shuttle details: to confirm.

Driving I-70

  • Heaviest traffic is typically westbound Friday afternoons (~2–7 PM) and eastbound Sunday afternoons/evenings. Leave early, leave late, or stay for dinner.
  • Check COtrip for closures, construction, and cameras.
  • The Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel (~11,150 ft) is the high point; CDOT sometimes meters traffic there.
  • Summer means construction and afternoon thunderstorms — give yourself a buffer on Friday the 23rd. Fill up and grab water before the climb (4,000+ ft from Denver).

Feeling good at altitude

About 25% of visitors sleeping above 8,000 ft in Colorado get some acute mountain sickness (headache, tiredness, nausea, poor sleep). It usually passes in a day or two. (CDC Yellow Book)

  • Arrive a day early if you can.
  • Hydrate more than you think you need — the air is thin and dry.
  • Go easy on alcohol for the first 48 hours.
  • Keep the first day or two mellow; save big hikes for later.
  • UV is stronger at elevation — sunscreen, sunglasses, hat.
  • If symptoms worsen, or you have breathlessness at rest, confusion, or trouble walking, seek care and head lower.

July weather (typical)

  • Typical July 24: high around 75°F, overnight low around 39°F.
  • Evenings cool fast — about mid-50s by 10 PM. Bring a jacket or wrap for the rooftop.
  • Afternoon storms are common (~41% chance of measurable rain). Showers often build ~3–6 PM and ease by 7–8 PM.
  • Sunset around 8:25 PM MDT.

Where to stay

  • Homewood Suites Dillon — venue hotel; walk to the reception. Room block: to confirm.
  • Keystone group houses (~10–15 min) — big Airbnbs for friend groups.
  • Breckenridge (~25–30 min) — more walkable town energy, longer drive back.
  • Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon condos — great for couples and small families; many on Summit Stage.
  • Book early — late July is peak summer. Getting home after the party / shuttle plan: to confirm.

Things to do

  • Dillon Amphitheater, Farmers Market, Marina, and the Summit County Recpath.
  • Frisco Bay Marina & Main Street (Butterhorn Bakery is a classic).
  • Keystone River Run Gondola for summer scenic rides.
  • Tip: plan outdoors for the morning — storms love the afternoon.
